With John Taggart
Greetings oxygen enthusiasts. I hope you are enjoying this issue of the paper. As you can see we are again packed with exciting new products and informative articles.
As is usually the case we have come across numerous questions about the multi-faceted world of oxygenation and detected various recurring themes. One prevailing sentiment is curiosity. Many people are aware of the beneficial properties of ozone, oxygen and hydrogen peroxide.
They take their stabilized oxygen every day and are familiar with the work of physicians in the field. But when a friend or family member contracts a condition that is known to succumb to bioxidative medicine they are unable to direct them toward treatment.
We are barraged with calls from individuals who are looking for treatments and are unable to locate them. On page three of this paper you will find the address of IBOM; the International Bio Oxidative Medicine Foundation. They are the referral service and lay organization for IOMA; the International Oxidative Medical Association.
When you send five dollars to IBOM they will send you their list of physicians. That list has grown considerably in recent years and is expected to continue to expand.
One problem that you may encounter in this regard is that bioxidative medicine is applicable to so many specialties and the physician on the list that is nearest to you may not specialize in the type of problem that you have. My suggestion is this.
Go to your doctor. Arm yourself first. Arm yourself with: 1) An issue of The Family News 2) The award winning documentary Ozone and the Politics of Medicine 3) Oxygen Healing Therapies by Nathaniel Altman 4) Hydrogen Peroxide Medical Miracle by Dr. Wm. Campbell Douglass 5) The physicians desk reference The Use of Ozone In Medicine by Renate Viebahn.
Any combination of two or three of the above should quicken the imagination of any well trained practitioner enough to get them to contact IOMA for the protocols. The simple fact is this - bioxidative therapies have come of age. They are safe. They are effective.
If you cannot persuade your physician to look into these potent non-toxic modalities, fire him. I'm not kidding. Find one who will. Medicine is changing. Doctors need to change along with it. As in any period of change there are two types of people - the quick and the dead. Maybe the loss of a few customers will open their minds. Don't forget who is wielding the wallet.
PYCNOGENOL
We carry a number of antioxidants. We feel that they are an indispensable part of a healthy regimen. One antioxidant that has become popular because of its powerful free radical scavenging properties is the extract of pine bark or grape seeds known as pycnogenol.
Some big shots patented or trademarked the word that Dr. Jacques Masquelier coined in 1979 to describe his discovery. So phooey on them, we won't use the "P" word. Instead we will refer to them by their scientific name Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins. Most refer to them as OPC's for short. OPC's are bioflavonoids.
They are renowned for their superior antioxidant power and instant bioavailability. They are known to strengthen and repair connective tissue, to reduce histamine production in allergic and inflammatory responses and to inhibit the degradation of connective tissue by inhibiting elastase and collagenase enzymes.
OPC's are the most powerful natural free radical scavenger and antioxidant yet discovered. Free radicals cause oxidative damage to cells and tissues.
Damage caused by free radicals is associated with aging. Without adequate protection from free radicals you could very likely age faster, develop stiff joints and wrinkled skin sooner. Free radical damage also plays a part in the degenerative diseases we associate with aging such as arthritis, circulatory disorders, diabetes, heart disease and atherosclerosis.
OPC's are a natural plant product made from the bark of the European coastal pine or the seed of grapes. They are a concentrate of a special class of water soluble bioflavonoids that are almost instantly bioavailable.
Bioflavonoids are a group of low molecular weight plant substances with recognized antioxidant properties and with the ability to inhibit the activity of certain enzymes which cause inflammation in the body. There are over 20,000 different bioflavonoids, some are more active than others.
Numerous human and animal studies have proven the rapid uptake and distribution of OPC's throughout the body. Being water soluble they are absorbed almost instantly. The tremendous popularity of OPC's as an antioxidant of choice is a testimony to their effectiveness.
POOLS SPAS & HOT TUBS
Swimming and bathing can be very enjoyable, relaxing and therapeutic.
Too many people that I speak to are somewhat perplexed. On one hand they know how much fun their hot tub or pool is but on the other no stretch of the imagination could bring them to conclude that an immersion in that chemical soup would be considered good for them.
So they just sigh, cut the check for the pool guy and buy more chlorine, algicide and shock treatment to keep their little science project from turning green. Nothing is worse than the shame and derision suffered by those who let their pool go au naturale.
Hardly a day goes by that I don't get a call from someone who solicited a quote from us on ozonating their pool or hot tub in the past, sat on the paperwork while they gathered their resolve and their shekels and decided to make their move. They are usually unable to conceal their exuberance as they announce "John, I'm ready - let's do it!" and an other closet skinny dipper takes the plunge.
Ozonating a pool or spa is not difficult but there are some important considerations. The first thing one needs to know is that ozone alone will only allow you to reduce your chemical usage by 85 to 90 percent. The primary reason for this is the short half life of ozone.
At seventy degrees ozone turns back into oxygen in about thirty minutes. The half life of ozone is very temperature sensitive. At lower temperatures it will last longer and at higher temperatures it will not last as long. The pump needs to be running for the ozone to be manufactured and mixed into the water.
Typically the ozone generator is wired right into the timer for the pump so that it can turn on and off with the pump. Ozone is then drawn into the stream of circulating water by the suction of a venturi. The ozone gas is mixed into the water via the return line and the excess gas is released through the ports on the pool or hot tub. Because of this, ozonated pools and tubs gurgle or bubble slightly.
Most people find this to be a very pleasant relaxing sound, somewhat like a fountain. Most people do not run their pumps 24 hours a day. Given the short half life of ozone, one half hour after the pump turns off you have beautifully clean water that is unprotected. Enter the residual disinfectants.
As stated above ozone does 85 to 95 percent of the work but some type of disinfectant needs to be added to protect the water while the pump is not running. Most knowledgeable individuals in the pool and spa industry recommend chlorine or bromine.
I say, to heck with that. We're trying to eliminate chemicals. We have found that hydrogen peroxide is a very suitable alternative residual disinfectant. By using hydrogen peroxide as a residual disinfectant you can have chemical free water that is infused with oxygen, ozone and hydrogen peroxide. Whoopee!
It is truly a godsend for any oxygen enthusiast. No more dry skin, frazzled hair, itchy burning eyes or faded swim trunks. As is our practice, we will not torture you with the gruesome detrimental properties of chlorine and it's byproducts the THM's. We simply enable you to remove that consideration from your life and get back to enjoying your pool or hot tub. Some people try to use hydrogen peroxide alone.
There are two reasons that make this unwise. First hydrogen peroxide has insufficient biocidal properties at the concentrations that are created to do the trick. The second is that the quantities required make doing so prohibitively expensive.
While the cost of the ozone equipment may look daunting, it is a one time expense that has a return. The chemical savings, net of the cost of electricity for running the generator, gives the ozone equipment about a five year payback. The cost savings is seldom a motivating factor in and of itself but it's nice to know that it pays to make your pool safe enough to swim in.
Ozone equipment needs to be properly sized for the conditions under which it will operate. We ask a battery of questions and perform calculations when designing a system. Ozone for pools is not a widget that one buys off the shelf and snaps in place.
Numerous companies have tried this approach and failed. It is important to get a system from knowledgeable experienced people. Nothing is worse than tying up good money in a system that is inadequate for your needs and having some joker ducking your phone calls as you pool turns green. Ozone works when done properly. Turn that toxic waste dump back into something that your family can safely use and enjoy.
COLO ZONE A proprietary blend of various oxides of magnesium designed to gently release oxygen in the digestive track for the purpose of cleansing. The average American has six to twelve pounds of undigested material built up and rotting in their intestines and colon.
There is no better way to eliminate these wastes than to oxidize them. COLO ZONE is an integral part of proper bowel maintenance. It is an ideal accompaniment to cleansing fasts and a godsend for those suffering from irregularity. Colon therapists routinely use it prior to irrigation to enhance a thorough cleansing of the colon.
What is CitriMax?
Nature's perfect diet ingredient. CitriMax is a standardized all-natural plant extract rich in (-) hydroxycitric acid (HCA). Chemically, HCA is very similar to citric acid found in oranges and other citrus fruits, but with wonderfully different properties. Studies show that HCA can help curb appetite, reduce food intake, and inhibit the production of fats and cholesterol.Unlike citric acid, HCA is present in only a few species of plants that grow primarily in South Asia.
The highest concentrations of HCA are found in the fruit rind of Garcinia cambogia, also known as "Malabar Tamarind" or "Goraka." For centuries, people in southern India have used the rind as a natural food preservative, flavoring agent and digestive aid. The (-) form of HCA (referring to the manner in which the molecule is structured) is the naturally occurring form of HCA that exhibits its unique properties.
In addition, studies show that HCA is as safe, perhaps safer, than is citric acid, which is used extensively in commercial food production. For these reasons, some are calling HCA "nature's perfect diet ingredient."
How does it work?
HCA inhibits fat production from carbohydrates. When foods are eaten, carbohydrates are digested and broken down into glucose, the special blood sugar the body uses for energy.
Glucose molecules that are not immediately used for energy are stored in the body's liver and muscles as glycogen. When glycogen stores become full, excess molecules of glucose are broken down further and converted into fat and cholesterol by an enzyme called ATP-citrate lyase. HCA works by temporarily inhibiting this enzyme. Animal studies have shown that HCA reduces fatty acid synthesis by approximately 40-70% for eight to twelve hours followingt a meal.
What else does it do?
HCA helps curb appetite and reduce food intake. As HCA inhibits ATP-citrate lyase, glucose molecules that are not turned into fat or cholesterol form additional glycogen. As glycogen levels increase, the body sends a satiety signal to the brain that it is full, thus suppressing appetite and reducing food intake. Animal studies have shown that HCA reduces food consumption by about 10 percent.
Is it safe?
HCA may be safer than citric acid found in oranges.
Acute toxicity studies show that HCA is as safe, perhaps safer, than is citric acid. Furthermore, HCA has a long history of common use in foods. A typical daily dose of HCA is equivalent to the rind of about half a fruit, which is not much more than that traditionally consumed by people.
However, since HCA is a potent inhibitor of cholesterol formation, it may affect the production of sterol-based hormones. Therefore, some experts feel that HCA should be avoided during pregnancy and lactation, and not given to young children.
Why is HCA unique?
It won't cause side effects or develop tolerance like other diet aids.
Most appetite suppressants act by stimulating the body's central nervous system (CNS). This frequently leads to side effects such as insomnia, nervousnes, depression, hypertension, and rapid heart rate. The body also tends to develop a tolerance against CNS stimulants, eventually rendering them ineffective.
HCA is not a CNS stimulant and won't cause side effects or lead to intolerance by the body. HCA suppresses appetite safely and effectively by working with the body's own natural processes.
Will HCA cause "yo-yo" dieting?
No. HCA's effects last considerably longer than other diet aids.
Many diet pills and programs lead to rapid weight gain once treatment stops. Studies show HCA avoids this common pitfall. After seven weeks of effective appetite suppression in one trial, there was no rebound; the weight gain of the group taking HCA remained less than that of the control group after the trail ended.
How much should I take?
Start with 750 mg. HCA plus 300 mcg. chromium per day.Animal trials suggest than an effective dose for humans is between 3 to 6 grams of HCA per day. However, two human trials found good results using much lower doses of HCA when combined with niacin-bound chromium.
At the end of two months in one trial, subjects taking a combination of 250 mg. HCA plus 100 mcg chromium three times a day on a low-fat diet lost nearly three times the weight of subjects on a low-fat diet taking a placebo. Those taking the HCA/chromium comination lost an average of 11 pounds and reported fewer cravings for sweets, greater energy and decreased appetite.
No side effects were reported. (Note: CitriMax contains 50% HCA. Thus, 500 mg CitriMax equals 250 mg. HCA.)
When should I take HCA?
In divided does 30-60 minutes before meals. Extensive trials show that HCA should be taken 30 to 60 minutes before meals to be effective, although it can remain active for several hours afterwards. Trials also show that HCA is 700% more effective when taken two times per day than when taken only once. This data suggests that three times per day may even be better.
What are the advantages of CitriMax?
CitriMax is a certified, full-potency source of HCA. CitriMax is a superior source of standardized high-potency HCA. Every batch of CitriMAx is certified by independent laboratory analysis using special state-of-the-art HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography).
Other sources using less HCA than their label claims. Experts at Rutgers University Center for Advanced Food Technology have confirmed that CitriMax meets its label claim and is more potent than other sources of HCA tested.
Why else should I choose CitriMax?
CitriMax resists lactone formation. Some sources of HCA rapidly degrade into a less effective derivative called HCA lactone. CitriMax is present in a special form of HCA that resists lactone formation, providing a higher quality, more potent source of HCA.
THE REFRESHER ozone air scrubber is rapidly becoming one of the most popular ozone generators in the circles of experienced oxygen enthusiasts. Unlike most air purification mediums where the air has to pass through the device in order to be treated, ozone is an ambient technology.
Ozone is emitted from The Refresher out into the air space to treat the air and surfaces of your living environment or work space. Ozone is the strongest bactericide and virucide known to man. That means that it will kill odor causing germs around the toilet bowl, laundry hamper, garbage can and kitchen sink. Ozone is capable of oxidizing chemicals that are present.
Typical examples of these are: the formaldehyde present in the adhesives used in flooring and in the particle board that is used in modern construction. Fire retardant chemicals in furniture and carpeting. solvents used in cleaning products and carbon monoxide from indoor heating devices.
Ozone coagulates airborne particulate like soot, pollen and dust so that they form molecules that are large enough to precipitate out of the air or get trapped by your conventional filter. These four properties make ozone ideal for air purification purposes. The Refresher is unique for a number of reasons. It is compact. Once you get used to ozonated air and familiar with its properties you won't want to go anywhere without your air scrubber.
Think about the germs in the carpet of a hotel room from the dirty feet of the person before you. Think about a few precious gulps of clean air after spending time in airplanes or taxis. The Refresher fits in any travel bag or suitcase. At home it conserves valuable shelf space. It is inexpensive.
Comparable ozone generators can cost up to one hundred dollars more and recently there has been upward drift on the prices of ozone generators. The Refresher will never give you too much ozone. The EPA and OSHA limits of 100 parts per billion are very sensible upward limits and are often exceeded by other units and although the threshhold of discomfort is several magnitudes below the threshold of harm, why would anyone want to use a unit that can create irritating levels of ozone.
The Refresher has been tested at maximum output in a confined space and would not exceed the OSHA limits. The ideal level of ozone is between 40 and 60 ppb depending on preference. The odor threshold, the level at which one can smell the ozone, is around 40 ppb and is the ideal level. The rule of thumb is that if you can smell the ozone it's too strong. A sensible person would be inclined to put the unit at a high setting initially and gradually notch it back until the ozone is barely perceptible.
This will maximize your air quality and your satisfaction with the unit. The Refresher is reliable and maintenance free. At 4.5 lbs. the unit stands 4" high is 6" wide and 6" deep. The only thing you need to do is clean the easily removable filter twice a year to enjoy years of dependable service.
NASTURTIUM
Nasturtium restorative face cream is an extrordinary innovation that is truly unique and remarkably effective. It has been developed by the inventors of Progest.
Don Carter and Dr Bruce McFarland, pioneers in progesterone supplementation, have produced Nasturtium a facial cream that provides the maximum amount of progesterone supplementation legally allowable with state of the art herbal phytelene complexes from Europe.
The manufacturers are so proud of this new product, which won the coveted "Product of the Year Award" for 1995 from the Inventors Club of America, that they are making one simple claim. If you don't feel that this is absolutely the best restorative face cream that you have ever used simply return the unused portion for a complete refund.
That's strong language in a competetive field. Rarely has a product recieved such attention and been so eagerly awaited as Nasturtium.
Nasturtium contains pineapple enzyme and lemon zest. The notorious free radical fighters Vitamins A & E, Jojoba, Canola and Safflower Oils. It also contains Marigold essence, natural progesterone, Nasturtium extract, an herbal sunblock, aloe vera, Pineapple Juice and Allantoin.
When you open it, it looks and smells so good that you'll be tempted to eat it with a spoon. It looks like a creamy orange sherbet. Most people report a tingling or tightening sensation shortly after applying Nasturtium.
In the brief period that we have been handling this product we have recieved the most favorable feedback of any new product that we have introduced in years. Women love the fact that it is not oily and frequently mention that the matte finish is not shiny and ideal to use as a base under makeup.
Possibly the most surprising thing about Nasturtium is the number of men who have been using it. Who wouldn't want to take ten years off their face while using an herbal sunblock. It also makes a soothing after sun cream.
The real hubub over Nasturtium is that people are realizing the connection between progesterone and DHEA, the youth hormone. Progesterone is the precursor to DHEA, a substance that is well recognized for its anti-aging, anti-stress, fatburning and skin restorative properties. Perhaps you're beginning to see why we're so excited about this product.
Think back to when you were in high school and you learned about chromosones. Little boys are X & X, while little girls are X & Y. The little boy's X being testosterone and the little girl's Y being estrogen. What about the X that they have in common? Progesterone is a basic human hormone! Men and women are more than 80% alike and much of our metabolism is regulated by hormones.
In the years to come progesterone supplementation is going to prove to be as fundamental as proper exercise, nutrition , quality water and oxygen. As a supplement it will be on a par with vitamins, minerals, oxygen and enzymes.
Because Nastutium is made entirely from natural ingredients it should be consumed within two months of being opened. Like most things that are whole and natural, it's best used when it's fresh. That means - use it, don't put it on the shelf and save it for a rainy day. It's food for your skin and metabolism.
The expensive french herbal complex EGX 251, which posseses high moisturizing activity, is contained in this cream. In addition to its moisturizing effect, the flavonoids, phenols and amino acids in this patented European herbal complex produce new biosynthesis of collagen and elastin and heals connective tissue damage.
This produces reconstruction of the underlying skin tissues producing a visible difference in the elastic fiber content of the skin. Antioxidant vitamins and acemannan are added to minimize the free radical damage that causes much of the destructive processes involved in skin aging.
QUALITY WATER
There are a number of important criterion to consider when deciding which water filter you should use. Most filters are little more than carbon block cartridges.
Why? Because activated carbon is very good for filtering out chlorine and providing clear good tasting water. They come up a little short when it comes to contaminant removal however which has led many manufacturers to use hybrid mediums. This means that activated carbon is used in combination with an other media in order to increase the amount of contaminants removed.
The pursuit of total contaminant removal has led to an overmerchandising of point of use water treatment devices. This is typified by the average unit having three or four water treatment modalities packed into the average thermos sized unit.
This looks great on TV and gets these units top ratings with NSF etc... but let's talk practically. The operative words in water treatment are volume and contact time. Over a period of time a filter is going to process a considerable quantity of water.
Given the same relative size of most filters, a unit that has a small amount of three or four treatment media will not last as long as one that has a substantial amount of one media that removes a majority of contaminants across a wide range of categories.
A water filter is not a fruit bowl or flower vase, it's an appliance. As such, compare it to your refrigerator. You don't look at it. You look at what comes out of it. How often do you clean it? When you do, do you like what you find? How often do you want to replace it?
Is it easy to use and maintain as well as being inexpensive to service? If you're like most people your water scrubber is probably a sealed unit or installed in line and you never really asked these questions when considering a water treatment device.
Water filters need to be cleaned and maintained if they are to do a good job and have a useful life. If you cannot get at or inside a unit you don't have an appliance, you have a disposable gadget. That gadget is probably not doing the same job it did when it was brand new.
The contaminants that are of most concern are 1)sediment 2)bacteria 3) chemicals i.e. pesticides, fertilizers and solvents that find their way into the water table 4) chlorine 5)heavy metals such as lead, mercury, silver and copper 6) fluoride 7) chlorination by-products or trihalomethanes; THM's.
These have been listed in ascending order according to their relative incidence and threat to your health. Most filters that I've examined, in the less than $300 range, are good at removing sediment and chlorine, trapping bacteria and filtering out some of the chemicals.
In the other areas they are less effective. If I were to launch into a litany about fluoride, heavy metals and THM"S and their carcinogenic, mutagenic, teritagenic, neurotoxic, toxic, allergenic and immunosupressive properties you'd wind up in a paranoid blue hypochondriac funk for days. Fortunately there is a way of removing these from the water you run through your body that is convenient and inexpensive.
The Lifetime 501 counter top filter can be installed by a little old lady with her bare hands in about ninety seconds. You can backflush and disinfect the unit with ease. The granular media is simple and inexpensive to replace. It removes the contaminants that you want out of your water. The Lifetime 501 uses a combination of activated carbon and bone charcoal in a loose granular form.
This water filter is equipped with stainless steel quick disconnect fittings. The importance of these cannot be over stated. First because it allows you to backflush the unit in seconds. This allows you to get the sediment out of the chamber as well as stirring up the loose granular media.
Most filters come in a cartridge where the media is formed into a block. This type of technology is subject to a process called channeling. The water passing through the filter bores little pathways in the media and proceeds to race through the filter.
This means that the water is coming in contact with a small portion of the media as well as allowing for too little contact time which results in reduced contaminant removal. A loose granular media causes the water to pass through in a uniform level improving contact time and contaminant removal. Back flushing stirs the media giving the water fresh surfaces to contact.
Disinfection. Disinfection. Disinfection. The Lifetime 501 comes with a short length of tubing and a squeeze bottle for passing hydrogen peroxide backwards through the unit to sterilize it. One can feelthe heat on the outside of the unit when doing this. The heat is from oxidation.
Hydrogen peroxide is oxidizing bacteria. Activated carbon is bacteriostatic. It traps bacteria. That bacteria needs to be killed periodically to keep the filter clean. You only need to feel that heat once with the 501 to get real peace of mind that you have the right filter. Unfortunately you will wind up a little wary of consuming anything that has been run across someone else's bacteria bed. If you can't disinfect your filter ... buy bottled water.
We chlorinate water to eliminate organic material. The by-product is an organo-chloride. Organochlorides are the second strongest carcinogen known to man. You're familiar with two of them, DDT and agent orange. The organochlorides that are created when water is chlorinated are called trihalomethanes or THM's. They bioaccumulate in adipose tissue.
They build up in the soft parts of your body. The EPA has spent hundreds of millions investigating alternative ways to disinfect water because THM's are such a health hazard. The city of Los Angeles discovered that its' residents had throat cancer at several times the national average due to THM's as a result of high chlorination requirements. They now use ozone. The Lifetime 501 removes in excess of 95% of THM's.
The Lifetime 501 is easy to install. It has has the unique attribute of being easy to backflush and disinfect. It is the only filter you'll ever need to buy because it is inexpensive to change the filtration media, hence the name Lifetime. I've reviewed numerous water treatment devices over the years not one of them instills the kind of confidence that this one does. If it's good enough for Elmer Heinrich, Dr. Kurt Donsbach, Joe Namath and Johnny T., then you can bet it's a quality unit.
In closing, I would like to share with you my new salutation and farewell. I think you will like it. It is based on the word salubrious which means that which is good for the health and morally wholesome. Two sentiments with which I'm sure you are able to concur. It is with a great heartfelt warmth that I bestow upon you, for the very first time, right here on this humble page a term that serves equally as a greeting or goodbye. From me unto you - SALUBRITY!
